Structure & Assessment

To achieve the ILM Level 5 Certificate or Diploma, you will complete a combination of assessed components that demonstrate your capability as an effective coach.

ILM Level 5 Certificate

  • Guided Learning Hours (GLH): 42
  • Practical Coaching/Mentoring: Minimum 18 hours
  • Total Qualification Time (TQT): 160 hours

Assessment Requirements:

  • Understanding the Skills, Principles and Practice of Effective Coaching and Mentoring within an organisational context
  • Undertaking 18 hours of Effective Coaching or Mentoring within an organisational context
  • Reviewing Own Ability as a Coach or Mentor within an organisational context

ILM Level 5 Diploma

  • Guided Learning Hours (GLH): 50
  • Practical Coaching/Mentoring: Minimum 54 hours
  • Total Qualification Time (TQT): 380 hours

Assessment Requirements:

  • Understanding the Skills, Principles and Practice of Effective Coaching and Mentoring within an organisational context
  • Undertaking an extended period of 54 hours of Effective Coaching or Mentoring within an organisational context
  • Reviewing Own Ability as a Coach or Mentor within an organisational context

Progression & Accreditation

Mission Inc is an approved ILM centre with Direct Claim Status, ensuring a streamlined assessment and certification process.

Completion of the ILM Level 5 Certificate or Diploma positions you as a competent and strategically aware coaching professional and provides progression to further qualifications and professional recognition, including:

  • Progression to ILM Level 7 Certificate or Diploma for Executive and Senior Level Coaches and Mentors
  • Progression to ILM Level 7 Certificate or Diploma for Coaching Supervisors
  • Progression to ILM Level 7 Award, Certificate, or Diploma in Leadership and Management

How long does the ILM Level 5 programme take, and can I fit it around full-time work?

Yes. The ILM Level 5 qualification is designed for working professionals and typically takes 12 months to complete part-time. Learning combines five live virtual training days with flexible self-study, supervised coaching practice, and one-to-one tutor support—allowing you to progress at a pace that fits around your professional and personal commitments.

Do I need previous coaching experience to enrol on the ILM Level 5?

No prior coaching qualification is required. The ILM Level 5is designed for managers, HR professionals and aspiring coaches who are new to structured coaching but already support others as part of their role. You’ll build practical capability from foundational principles to advanced techniques, supported throughout by expert facilitators.  You will need to identify 2-3 individuals to coach to support the coaching practice.

What support will I receive during the programme?

From day one, you’ll be supported by a dedicated coach-mentor-supervisor who guides you through each stage of your learning and assessment. You’ll also join small, interactive cohorts for live workshops, peer supervision and shared practice plus gain ILM membership for access to exclusive resources, templates and insights.

What is the difference between the ILM Level 5 Certificate and Diploma?

The main difference between the ILM Level 5 Certificate and Diploma lies in the depth of coaching practice and supervision required. The Certificate involves a minimum of 18 hours of coaching with 2 to 3senior-level coachees, along with 1 hour of supervision. In contrast, the Diploma requires a more substantial commitment of 54 hours of coaching with 4 to 9 coachees, supported by 3 hours of supervision. This increased level of practice and support reflects the deeper engagement, reflection and professional development expected in the Diploma programme.
