As a CxO or business manager, you will be judged on the success of the teams you manage- there is no hiding from results! But how can you focus on building for the future whilst keeping your teams aligned to their current goals?
It seems like a paradox; your priorities cannot be everywhere. You either keep a tight rein on your teams to their current short-term performance goals, or raise your sight to the future for a "big picture" vision, and risk the day-to-day progress you've spent time building up.
Fortunately, there is a way you can get the best of both worlds! Here we will consider some "quick wins" that can keep you ahead of the competition today, without derailing plans for the future trajectory of your company.
Invest in Technology. So many companies get bogged down with systems that were either more relevant to the past version of the company(with different clients' needs), or chosen in haste to fix a time-critical problem. As both your company changes, and the available technology suite changes, are you still using the best solutions? Undertake an audit of all software / hardware you use, and consider where switching now can free up the valuable resource of employee time- which means more effort can be expended both on short-term goals and long-term vision.
Cultivate Leadership. Develop leaders who can think short-term and plan long-term by empowering your leaders to make decisions. It can be scary to lose control and sometimes frustrating when teams get it wrong, but ultimately an empowered leader is one who can drive teams' performance to the betterment of the company. Look for ambitious employees who show initiative, and allow them the freedom to make decisions.
Set Clear Destinations. Most people know about SMART goals and KPIs; but how many goal setters know how to correlate their teams' goals to those of their own managers? If teams are pulling in different directions, it can be hard to work towards a common goal- teams only focus on the short-term achievement of tick-boxes rather than a vision for growth. If everyone knows where the company needs to be, they can work towards that goal in common cause.
Smart Scaling. Often, a struggling company gets there from failing to recognise changing conditions (financial headwinds, struggling sales pipeline affecting figures, or cost of sale rising faster than a frame agreement allows your prices to rise.) By having access to timely data, you can see your performance against targets immediately, and understand if it is time to commit resources into growth, or if you need a period of consolidation to build up resilience. Endeavour to undertake a "big picture" review of teams' performance, focussing on financial health and barriers to growth.
